Vishwas Shirgaonkar

Vishwas Shirgaonkar received his initial musical training from Smt. Pushpa Rajhans and two stalwarts of the Gwalior gharana: Pandit Anant Kogaje and late Pandit Yeshwantbua Joshi.

Subsequently, Vishwas was initiated into the gayaki of the Jaipur Gharana by late Pandit Anandrao Limaye.Vishwas Shirgaonkar combines the two major sub-streams of the Jaipur gharana gayaki.

He has received training from late Pandit Anandrao Limaye of Kolhapur, who, as a disciple of Pandit Govindbua Shaligram,belonged to the Ustad Alladiya Khan tradition. After Pandit Limaye’s demise in 1994, Vishwas received training from the late Pandit Ratnakar Pai, another erudite guru of the Jaipur gayaki, who was the disciple of Pandit Mohanrao Palekar and Ustad Gulubhai Jasdanwalla and who represented Jaipur gayaki in it’s original form.

Vishwas has received guidance in the Marathi Abhangs from Pandit Appasaheb Deshpande
(Nutan Gandharva). During his early years, Vishwas also received instruction in tabla from Pt. Prabhakar Desai of Nagpur.

Vishwas maintains the specialty and the purity of the Jaipur gharana gayaki. Its solid foundation of bandish,its many-stranded elaboration of the raga, its play with the laya and its complex taan patterns are all integral to his singing. In a musical atmosphere leaning towards eclecticism Vishwas has enthralled knowledgeable audiences with his exposition of both popular and esoteric raagas and compositions from the traditional repertoire of Jaipur gharana. His singing reassures the contemporary audience that the gharana based aesthetic principles are far from outdated.
Vishwas performs regularly in India and the US and is currently on the faculty and Board of Directors of India International School, Washington DC where he is engaged in teaching Hindustani classical music and increasing awareness about it in the US. Vishwas is a certified music instructor/examiner of ABGMM and Barati Vidyapeeth, Pune. Several of his students have successfully passed examinations of Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal (ABGMM) since 2010.

Vishwas holds an M.S. in Systems Management and a B.E. (Electrical Engineering) and has led a successful career in the World Bank managing its financial and administrative systems.
